The Matrix Barcode Standard

Unlike traditional 1D barcodes (like those found on grocery items) which only store data horizontally, a QR code is a 2D matrix barcode. This means it stores data both horizontally and vertically, allowing it to hold significantly more information-up to 7,089 numeric characters or 4,296 alphanumeric characters. The three large squares in the corners of a QR code are known as Finder Patterns. These squares tell your smartphone camera exactly where the code is, how large it is, and what orientation it's in, which is why you can scan a QR code upside down or at an angle without issue.

How Error Correction Works

One of the most powerful features of the QR standard is the Reed-Solomon Error Correction. This mathematical algorithm adds backup data to the code, allowing it to be read even if part of the QR code is damaged, dirty, or obscured. There are four levels of error correction: L (Low - up to 7% damage), M (Medium - up to 15%), Q (Quartile - up to 25%), and H (High - up to 30%). If you plan to put a logo in the middle of your QR code or place it outdoors where it might get scratched, higher error correction ensures the code remains fully scannable.

The Privacy of Offline Generation

When you generate a QR code containing personal contact information (vCard), a private Wi-Fi password, or a confidential intranet URL, you don't want that data intercepted. Many free QR generators on the internet take the text you type, send it to a remote backend server, generate the image, and send it back to you.
